Place the spur gear section of the shaft in a vise equipped with copper jaws. Install the bearing retaining nut and tighten it securely using the special J-1316 wrench. With the nut in a locking position, install the nut lock.
The shifter sleeve, having three tapered teeth in each side which work in connection with the detent lock balls and springs in the shaft, must line up with the position of these balls and springs.

Press the roller bearing on the taper, install its retaining nut and tighten it down, using special J-1316 wrench, until the clearance between the low-speed double reduction pinion and the bearing inner race is from .015" to .020" (.015" or near this preferred), Fig. 43. Lock the nuts by installing the lock rings, Fig. 43.
NOTE—Both double reduction pinions must have no less than .015" or more than .020" (.015" or near this preferred) side clearance or end play to prevent side scoring and to permit proper shifter sleeve travel.
