Section 2  - Frame

2-16
Double-Acting Opposed, Internal Valve Type
1.   Disassemble as previously described for valve replacement, then:
2.   Remove plugs over piston screws by piercing with a sharp tool as in Fig. 26, and lifting out.
3.   Disassemble piston by removing piston screws, Fig. 27.
2. Check camshaft for wear in housing by moving arm sideways. If shaft is galled or worn, replace complete shock absorber.
REASSEMBLY OF SHOCK ABSORBER
Single-Acting Type
1. Insert relief valve and valve nut.

Insert intake valve, spring, and retainer assembly in piston spring and assemble spring and piston in shock absorber.
Compress piston spring with arbor press as in disassembly, and insert hold down tool.
Remove from arbor press and move arm around so that cam is in normal operating position.
NOTE—If piston is exceptionally free in cylinder, an oversize piston may be installed. The oversize piston is distinguished from the standard piston by a blue paint mark on the top edge.
5.   Place shock absorber in fixture in same position as before and while holding arm in place, remove hold down tool.
6.   Fill shock absorber to within one-half inch of the top with fresh G.M. Shock Insulating Fluid.
7.   Move arm through normal operating strokes to expel any trapped air. While moving arm, continue to fill until fluid level remains steady, then fill to within two tablespoonfuls of capacity.
8.   Replace cover, using new gasket, and replace cover screws, screwing cover down tight.

Double-Acting Opposed, External Valve Type
1.   Place shock absorber in fixture and remove end caps as in Fig. 28.
2.   Remove valve nuts, rebound and compression valves.
3.   Remove piston valve spring retainer clip with a screwdriver. Fig. 22, then lift valves out.
4.   Remove plugs over piston screws by piercing with a sharp tool and lifting out. Fig. 26.
5.   Disassemble pistons by removing piston screws, Fig. 27.

Fig. 29—Where to File Chamfer on Piston
Double-Acting Opposed, Both Internal and External Valve Types
Before assembling pistons in the above type shock absorber a chamfer must be filed on the rebound piston (the one without the anti-rotation spring) at the point indicated by arrow in Fig. 29. This is necessary so as to allow the anti-rotation spring to enter the other piston during assembly.
1.   Assemble piston with cam clearance up, and also with high arch of anti-rotation spring up.
2.   Insert piston screws tightly, then back off from one to one and one-half turns to prevent a possible bind between cam and cam buttons.
3.    Install new plugs over piston screws and expand in place.

INSPECTION AFTER DISASSEMBLY
1. Wash all parts in kerosene and inspect for wear or defects. Blow out valve orifices with compressed air. Be sure valves are clean.
