NOTE—Operation 5 is important as this pro­vides expansion space for the fluid inside the shock absorber body.
are not serviceable. Other parts may be serviced as follows:
1.   Disconnect link at axle.
2.   Remove mounting bolts and remove shock ab­sorber from car.
3.   Clean shock absorber thoroughly and drain fluid.
CAUTION—If shock absorber is to be serviced removed from car, do not clamp the unit in a vise as pressure on the body may partially col­lapse the cylinder and cause the piston to bind. Always bolt the shock absorber to a holding fixture.
TO CHANGE RELIEF VALVE ONLY
Single-Acting Type
1.   Remove valve nut using a heavy screwdriver, preferably offset type.
2.   Remove relief valve, using a small hooked tool or bent wire as shown in Fig. 18.
3.   Insert new relief valve and replace valve nut, using a new gasket.

To Fill Double-Acting Shock Absorbers (All Types) While on Car
1.   Clean all dirt from around filler plug.
2.   Remove filler plug, Fig. 9.
3.   Fill to capacity with G.M. Shock Insulating fluid.
4.   Work arm up and down by bouncing car while adding fluid, or disconnect link at axle and operate arm as shown in Fig. 19, while filling.
CAUTION-Shock absorber must not be filled completely full. Approximately 10% air space must be provided as over-filling may result in blowing the cover gasket out. After filling to capacity, extract a quantity of fluid equal to 10% of the amount the shock absorber will hold.
5.   Replace filler plug, using new gasket.
REPLACEMENT OF SHOCK ABSORBER PARTS

Double-Acting Parallel Cylinder Type
1.   Remove valve nut as shown in Fig. 20.
2.   Remove relief valve.
3.   Insert new relief valve and replace valve nut, using a new gasket.
Double-Acting Opposed, Internal Valve Type
1.   Remove shock absorber from car.
2.   Remove dirt, grease and loose paint from out­side of shock absorber.
