	number 1 cylinder exhaust valve adjusting screw. Set the indicator at .036", Fig. 25. Continue to hand crank the engine until the indicator hand just stops moving. At this point the indicator should read zero plus or minus .003".	When it becomes necessary to replace the leather seal, place a new oil seal on the driver with the free end of the leather towards the end of the tool. The seal can then be driven into place in the cover with a few light blows of a hammer, Fig. 26.


		Fig- 24—Installing Timing Gear Cover Oil Seal When installing a timing gear cover, it is important that it be carefully centered. The guide J-966, Fig. 27, fits over the crankshaft and, when in position, guides and holds the

	Fig. 25-Checklng Valve Timing Timing Gear Lubrication To properly lubricate the timing gears, a timing gear oil nozzle of tubular construction is pressed and flared into place in the Crankcase front end plate. Oil is supplied to this nozzle by the oil groove in the front camshaft bearing. This carries oil to the top side of the camshaft journal as this side has practically a constant clearance due to the downward pressure of the tappets on the camshaft. The oil is fed through this clearance to the milled slot on the rear surface of the front end plate, then into the nozzle. In the event the oil nozzle is damaged, it will be necessary to replace the front end plate assembly as it is not practical to replace the nozzle only without the use of special equipment. TIMING GEAR COVER The timing gear cover is a pressed steel stamping, heavily ribbed for strength. A spring loaded leather oil seal is assembled into the crankshaft opening to prevent oil leakage around the hub of the harmonic balancer. The seal is pressed into a pocket in the cover by the use of oil seal replacer J-995.
		Fig. 27—Timing Gear Cover end Centering Gauge timing gear cover in its correct position, so when the balancer is installed it will not damage the oil seal. A coating of grease around the inside surface of the leather, will aid in preventing damage to the seal during this operation.
