DELCO BRAKE SERVICE MANUAL
frame. Remove the hose from the wheel cylinder.
—Remove cap screws which fasten wheel cylinder to brake backing plate; remove retracting springs from anchor pins and disconnect connecting links. Wheel cylinder can then be withdrawn.
To remove rear wheel cylinder : —Follow the same instructions as for the front wheel cylinders except copper tubing must be disconnected at the wheel cylinder inlet. Wash all parts in Declene. Inspect and replace all worn or damaged parts with genuine Delco Brake parts. Cylinder bores should be inspected for scratches, pits, or corrosion. If found rough or corroded, smooth the surface with crocus cloth, or fine wire scratch brush. Wash cylinder bore carefully after this operation. If badly scratched, replace with new cylinder assembly.
Honing of brake cylinders is not recommended.
All new Delco Master Cylinder and Wheel Cylinder bores are bearingized by diamond boring and rolling under heavy pressure to obtain a highly polished hard surface. Honing destroys this finish and leaves a softer, rougher surface which causes rapid piston cup wear. Honing also enlarges the bore. If clearance between the piston and bore is increased too greatly by honing, heavy braking pressure may force the heel of the rubber cup between the piston and the bore pinching the rubber and causing early failure.
If the bore of the wheel cylinder can be restored, carefully inspect all internal parts. If they show excessive wear or corrosion, replace with new Delco pistons, cups, and spring. A Delco Wheel Cylinder Repair Kit is available for each application and contains all the necessary rubber parts to make a complete repair job. (See Figure 10.) Some Kits also contain piston spring in addition to cups and boots.
